Edison Invented Single-Pour Concrete House, NJIT Researcher Finds
One of his very own light bulbs went off in Thomas Edison's head when he cooked up the idea to construct a building in a single act using one material.
At least that's what architectural professor Matt Burgermaster from the New Jersey Institute of Technology discovered.
According to Burgermaster's research, Edison, in addition to all his other accolades, was a pioneer of pre-fabricated construction and patented the single-pour concrete house in 1917.
"He basically said, we have the material here and it's liquid in nature so why don't we try to, instead of build a foundation, or part of a building, why don't we cast an entire building in one single-pour?" said Burgermaster.
While Europeans are widely-recognized as being the "forerunners" in pre-fabricated construction, Edison was right there with them, Burgermaster said.
"The kind of creativity it takes to come up with that, it's a pretty open ended way of thinking that you wouldn't expect from a scientist," he said.
But why didn't the Edison system catch on quite like that of the Europeans?
"There wasn't really a market for it," said Burgermaster. He said the Europeans responded much better to the use of concrete. "If one travels around today, it's much more common for that material to be used than here."
Edison's creativity, though, may once again resonate in today's market that is craving for new technology, low costs and energy efficiency — exactly what Edison was preaching in the early 1900s.
"He was desperately trying to figure out how to provide a reasonable, decent cost-efficient home for working class families and people living in dirty cities and manufacturing facilities," said Burgermaster.
"Today a lot of things that are cost effectiveness and energy efficiency are huge concerns. People are looking at pre-fabricated solutions to houses. And it has recently become quite popular again in today's market."
Three concrete houses can be found on the grounds of the national historic Edison museum and one can be found in Montclair.
