Two Tenure Track Positions in Structural Engineering | Florida
Faculty Positions – Structures (Bridge Engineering) Civil and Environmental Engineering Department- Florida International University. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Florida International University (FIU) invites nominations and applications for two tenure-track positions in the area of Structural Engineering with specialization in Bridge Engineering. The positions are intended to be filled at the assistant professor level, however, an associate or full professor level will be considered for someone with exceptional qualifications and external funding.
Candidates are sought with expertise and a record of achievement in all areas relevant to bridge engineering including but not limited to experimental, numerical and analytical modeling, instrumentation, non-destructive testing, pre-stressed concrete and steel bridges, advanced systems and innovative materials, service life and sustainability, and wind effects. Evidence of research/scholarship is required. Industrial experience is a plus. The successful candidate will be expected to exhibit the ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research and scholarship and to identify potential funding sources to support such research. The Bridge/Structural/Wind Engineering group in the department is carrying out significant research studies and the successful candidates will be required to collaborate with the group. A national center devoted to Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) ( www.abc.fiu.edu ) was recently established in the college of Engineering and Computing. The ABC Center works closely with various sectors of the bridge engineering community and the successful candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with the center. Responsibilities will include teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the traditional structural engineering curriculum, directing graduate students, and establishing an externally funded research program in the area.
Besides the ABC center, the department has excellent structural research facilities, including laboratories of structural testing and wind engineering. The Titan America Structures and Construction Testing Laboratory (TASCTL) is one of the largest full-scale testing facilities in the State of Florida with a total area of 6375 ft2 of floor space. It is equipped with a full-scale structural testing system (FSST). The FSST consists of a 15 ft tall testing frame that stands above a 35 ft × 65 ft strong concrete floor with 4 ft thickness and 100,000 lbs capacity anchor points on a 3 ft × 6 ft grid. The laboratory is equipped with two high capacity fatigue rated actuators and other material testing equipments. The Mobile Structural Diagnostic Laboratory (MSDL) is a self-contained mobile laboratory that specializes in Structural Health Monitoring and nondestructive testing (NDT) of infrastructure, including bridges, pavement, utility structures, traffic signals, and support foundations. Wall of Wind (WoW), a full-scale testing facility at FIU, is the latest technology in hurricane simulation and damage mitigation research critical for achieving hurricane resilient and sustainable infrastructures for vulnerable US coastal communities. The final phase of WoW -- “12-fan WoW” -- comprising of twelve electric fans powered through twelve 700 HP motors. The new 12-fan system will achieve controllable, programmable, and repeatable testing in flows that adequately and economically replicate hurricane winds up to Category 5 accompanied by wind-driven rain and flying debris effects.
