Coach gives local youth a workout
"You can do it ... move ... you can do it, buddy," yelled the volunteer as the young boy held the heavy traffic cone as high as he could over his shoulder and ran. As the cone crashed down to the ground at the end of the course, the boy looked tired, but proud.
Marcus Mickens watches the boys with a huge grin on his face.
"I always have a smile on my face. I can't get rid of it. I just want these kids to do good," Mickens said.
For the past two years, Mickens has been meeting with local youth on a family-owned field across from Oviedo High School every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning to lead intense physical training.
Children of all ages, from elementary school through high school, spend two hours every session working on agility drills with hurdles and ladders, dragging sleds with weights, flipping dump truck tires and stepping up and down on milk crates. Mickens has plenty of experience on the field working with kids: he was a flag football coach for four years for Hagerty Pop Warner football, two years for Oviedo Pop Warner football and eight years for the Oviedo Knights, Central Florida Youth Football League.
Mickens said his conditioning program began with training his own three sons, Marquis, 13, Micah, 11, and Madison, 10, along with a few nephews. As word spread of his training success, local kids asked to join in on the fun.
Today, an average of 35 children attend the free training twice a week.
"Sometimes I look around and think, 'Oh my goodness,' " Mickens said as he surveyed the large crowd of boys forming this past Saturday morning.
Working with local youth keeps Mickens going, he said, along with working two jobs and raising three boys with his wife, Pamela.
"A lot of them don't have a mom and a dad, and I kind of take them under my wing and teach them basic things like saying, 'Yes, ma'am,' and 'No, ma'am,' 'Yes, sir,' 'No, sir,' shaking a man's hand firmly and looking people in the eye," he said. "I love football and if I can get them out here by throwing a football or running them, I can sneak manners onto them."
Several volunteers from the community assist Mickens with the different agility drill stations, making the training run smoothly. Every few weeks, James Davis, a Seminole County Sheriff's deputy, joins in and helps the boys run 40s.
"We want to see progress from all the work we put in during the week ... and we do," Mickens said.
