Rochester-area startups seek more care and feeding
So you want to start a business Tips from Jan Pisanczyn, regional director of the Small Business Development Center at The College at Brockport:
1. Start with a good idea and conduct research to ensure that you'll be meeting a need.
2. You're more likely to succeed if you have some experience in the field you want to enter.
3. Write a business plan. You can find free resources to help, such as the Small Business Development Center. Also, establish a team of advisers who can help with unfamiliar issues.
4. Make sure you have enough access to capital. The business plan should include a budget and it should err on the high side. Often, people underestimate expenses and overestimate revenues.
5. Stay on top of the business plan and make sure it's working.
