Bronchial Asthma: Natural Treatment and Home Remedies

The asthma is a chronic inflammatory lung disease of the airways, characterized by difficulty in breathing due to reduction or blockage of airflow, as well as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and often accompanied by extreme symptoms of anxiety due to inability to breathe. The onset of asthma is linked to genetic and environmental factors and its increase in recent years is mainly due to increased pollution of big cities. Asthma is manifested by attacks of shortness of breath due to overproduction of mucus in the airways and contraction of airway smooth muscle, with consequent reduction of its diameter (bronchospasm).

Here are few of the effective home remedies for the treatment of asthma:-

Coffee

Coffee (Coffea arabica) in moderate amounts can be useful to relieve the congestion caused by colds, allergies or asthma. Caffeine is related to the dimethylxanthine theophylline, a group of anti-asthmatic drug. A cup of strong coffee increases circulation and speeds up the metabolism. Some substances present in coffee, including theobromine and theophylline, facilitating the movement of air to the lungs and inhibit bronchospasm (contraction of the muscles of the bronchial tubes making it difficult to breath), relieving bronchitis and coughs in facilitating breathing.

Garlic/Onion

Garlic and onions, traditional ingredients in Brazilian cuisine, have long been used to treat bronchitis, allergies and asthma, can be consumed in teas or soups. Some essential oils such as rosemary, can block the airway constriction induced by histamine, a chemical responsible for allergies. Ginkgo biloba herb known for being a great brain stimulant, has already been shown to inhibit the release of the protein responsible for causing bronchial spasms.

Steam

Traditionally, steam inhalations are the methods indicated by herbalists to improve breathing. Eucalyptus expands the lungs and encourages breathing by increasing oxygen in the cells.

Ephedra

Ephedra, a plant of the precursor ephedrine, has also been widely used in a tea to relieve asthma attacks. In this case, the whole plant is used, not only the extract of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, which are dangerous and can rapidly accelerate the heart rate. Ephedra has strong anti-spasmodic effects and acts to dilate the airways, and acts quickly on the relief of mucosal edema. It is a stimulant similar to adrenaline, having a remarkable effect on the smooth muscle fibers.
