Program encourages updating of woodstoves

Area homeowners looking to swap out an old, dirty woodstove may be able to do it without burning up much cash under a new program aimed at helping clean up the region’s air.

The program, funded by federal stimulus money, will offer vouchers of up to $2,000 to people who replace an old, uncertified woodstove with a new, cleaner stove or a clean heating appliance. A total of $200,000 is available for the program.

Only homeowners living within the Eugene, Springfield and Cottage Grove urban growth boundaries are eligible. Lane Regional Air Protection Agency spokeswoman Sally Markos said the program is aimed at reducing the amount of particulate pollution — primarily soot — kicked out by woodstoves every winter. Winter particulate pollution in the region pushes close to the limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and exceeding the limit ultimately could prompt new restrictions on woodstove use.

According to a 2009 survey, about 8,000 uncertified woodstoves remain in use in the Eugene-­Springfield area. Most were built before 1986, when new rules went into effect requiring woodstoves to meet lower emission limits.

On the worst winter days, woodstoves pump 8.5 tons of particulates daily into the air locally, Markos said. That’s more than all industrial sources combined.

The smoke becomes especially harmful during periods in winter when a temperature inversion sets in, with a warm air mass moving in on top of an existing cold air mass, holding the calm cold air mass in place and allowing the smoke to accumulate.

The woodstove changeout program will eliminate only 100 to 200 of the uncertified stoves, but Markos said that’s enough to make a difference.

“We’d make a pretty good dent at it,” she said.

The amount home­owners receive under the program depends on what type of appliance they buy to replace the woodstove. Those who buy an electric or natural gas furnace or a geothermal, oil or propane system would get the most, $2,000.

Those who replace old woodstoves with a new pellet stove would get $1,500, and those who buy a new, certified woodstove would get $1,000.

The money would come in the form of a voucher that LRAPA gives directly to the retailer that provides the new appliance. A list of qualified retailers is available on the agency’s website.

I got these from a buddy in exchange for some tattoo work (gotta love the barter system). The first is an old (not sure hold old, exactly) metal New York State highway sign, embossed. The second pic is a pair of OEM chevy embossed metal license plates, originally acquired from a guy who worked at a dealership in the 60s thru the 80s. Both are filthy, as they were hanging in a garage in the general vicinity of an old wood stove.

First off, any idea of the age / time frame of any of these? Second, in terms of cleaning, anyone have any experience? I found info online but it usually is specific to whether your sign is porcelain, enamel or painted metal. Which would the highway sign be?

I did some cursory Wikipedia research and found that this sign is as old as they get. This design was used from 1927 (at the inception of the federal highway system) through 1948 (when the design was changed slightly and the font smoothed out). Pretty cool to know it's that old, I was thinking 50's or 60's era.

To be honest, in my eyes restoring it takes away from its sentimental/historical value.
