RIGHT TURN ONLY!! Because You Kan Kan Kannagi

Comic-con is just around the corner! Yet for many these days, it seems Comic-con exists only for people to lament how hard it is to get passes to Comic-con. Perhaps one day all this Hollywood madness will subside. Perhaps one day it'll be about comics again—oh, who am I kidding. It's war out there, and everyone heading to San Diego had better be well-armed. "Nagi, a strange young girl in many different ways, appears before Jin, a normal high-school-aged boy. She calls herself a goddess, but is she really? Yes, as a matter of fact she is! And soon, the odd pair starts living under the same roof together. Thus begins the first volume of a bizarre manga tale that winds its way through both the comical and serious ... more or less." At first glance, Kannagi looks like yet another magical-girlfriend story, but what it actually does is turn everything about the genre upside-down. Nagi is the anti-Belldandy, an impetuous brat who seeks to be served rather than to serve, and whose attempts at sorcery either fail hilariously (she super-glues a toy magic wand to a table) or require assistance on Jin's part (just watch their madcap battle against a demon-possessed Superball). It's not just the magical mishaps, though; this volume also puts an amusing spin on typical teen relationships. Things get really fun when Nagi worms her way into Jin's school and, instead of getting all cutesy and flirty, Jin counteracts this by dodging Nagi's attempts to hug him, getting into a wild slapfight, and generally being all indignant about it. Isn't a contentious relationship like that a lot more fun than the usual romantic dalliances? The clean-lined art, with straightforward layouts and easily identifiable characters, make this series easy to follow from the get-go. With the visual humor coming at the speed that it does—from comical faces to slapstick attacks—it's all about keeping the art simple and snappy, which this series does. It's true that Kannagi comes across as fast, fun, and energetic. But it lacks much of anything else behind the lively exterior, with a male lead as spineless and dull as any romantic-comedy protagonist of the last twenty years, and a heroine who lacks any other traits besides being selfish and yelling a lot. Yes, it's funny to watch Jin bickering with Nagi, but it's not like he ever really stands up to her , you know?

Gen Manga #1 review - mon0r

This time I’m going to write about something slightly different than usual. Gen Manga is a monthly magazine that will feature various seinen doujinshi series and right now the first issue is available for free on their website. I decided to read it and see if it was any good and as it turns out I do think it has some potential. It only features the first chapter or so of 4 different series in the first issue so it’s a bit hard to really judge if they’re going to be any good, but I think three of the four were high enough quality that I’d read more if it was available. Let’s summarize what I thought of all of them!

First was Wolf by Nakamura Shige and it’s a martial arts sport manga that seems to be about boxing and sumo. While traveling to Tokyo the junior sumo wrestler Shota meets a mysterious stranger on the train. He says he’s going to Tokyo to kill someone. Shota is a very sentimental crybaby and his love for his grandma seems to resonate with this stranger who is reminded of his mother who appears to be dead. When some punks on the train mess with Shota the stranger beats them up and their future friendship seems to be sealed.

To me the most unique thing about Wolf was how the sentimental and “weak” attitude of Shota wasn’t exploited by bullies in any way I’m used to really. Apart from that it felt like this could be a very familiar sports style manga, but going by the first chapter it’s hard to tell if it’s going to hook me or not. The art is pretty sloppy and simple, but it looks just good enough that I think it works if you can tolerate the style. It does not have handsome characters of either gender in the first chapter and from the style it’s just doesn’t look like a manga that’s going to appeal anyone with its looks. The plot pacing was slightly off I think in one section, but mostly the story flowed pretty well so if it improves in the next few chapters it could be worth your time.

Next was VS Aliens by Suzuki Yu and this seems to be a comedy mystery romance style manga in a high school setting. Here our main character Kitaro is pulled aside by a girl in school he’s never spoken to before and asked if he can do anything about the alien in the class next door. This supposed alien is one of the most popular girls in school who by every appearance doesn’t seem to be an alien. Kitaro decides to somewhat reluctantly go along with it and asks the girl if she in fact is an alien. While at first it seems as if the alien talk was all nonsense it becomes a bit intriguing when the supposed alien girl next day calls him over and tells him that she isn’t sure anymore if she’s an alien or not. She brought it up at home and her mother reacted in a very peculiar way and told her to never bring that up again. This has made her rattled, but Kitaro reassures her that he’ll be her friend even if she turns out to be an alien which calms her down.
