Who said bullies are bad?
SEBRING - Will Smith wants people to know there is a difference â actually there are several -- between the American pit bull terrier and the American Bully.
Ida Zwayer, whose family has always had bully dogs, would like to see people become educated about them.
"They are good dogs if you give them a chance," Zwayer said.
The public will be able to learn more about American bullies, a fairly new breed, during a registered dog show with the American Bully Kennel Club (A.B.K.C.)
The "Bully Summer Slam" will be held at the Highlands County Fair Convention Center in Sebring on Sept. 17. The show will begin at 9 a.m. Admission is $10.
Although the show is for bullies, people who have other breeds can also attend. The cost for them is $15.
Blue Jewels Kennel in Sebring is hosting the show. Smith is the owner and CEO of the kennel.
Smith said, at this point, he is expecting at least 90 dogs to show up. People from around the state as well as from Texas and Georgia are planning to attend.
"I wanted to see a better perception on this breed," Smith said. "What makes it hard, and what makes it even harder is when you have the general public have a bad rap on these dogs and then the people who actually own the dogs â even the ones that just don't take the time out to get educated about this breed⦠You see them doing wrong things and that particular dog attacks something or someone. That just makes it harder."
Although the pit bull and American Bully can look similar, the differences are in physical appearance. Smith said the head is bigger and neck is broader on the bully; the body size and bone structure are different.
"All of these things play a big deal in the A.B.K.C. world, which would define your animal as an American Bully compared to the classic pit bull terrier," Smith said.
In order to show a dog, a person has to be registered with A.B.K.C. Smith said there are different classes within the club.
"We hope to bring awareness and knowledge about this breed," Smith said. "Hopefully we can have this show year after year to gain awareness here in Highlands County which would be a very, very good thing because anyone who owns this type of breed â or anyone who has owned this breed - would say this is the most loyal dog that they have ever owned in their life."
Smith said he and his wife love the breed and they wanted to show dogs. They began doing research and found out about the A.B.K.C.

Training Staffordshire Bull Terriers - Some Important Principles ...
Training staffordshire bull terriers can effortlessly be done at home, and you do not necessarily have to get your dog to obedience classes. Nevertheless to get the best results it is a good idea to begin training your puppy when it is still young and impressionable. However, you can still educate mature staffies successfully; it will just involve a bit more work.
Staffies could seem to be powerful and intimidating, but in reality they adore being with people and are very wamhearted. Staffies are also famous for their allegiance, as are some other dog breeds. It is highly recommended that you commence training your staffy early so that you and they can benefit from a friendly, mutually respectful kinship.
As you first get started with training staffordshire bull terriers, you should establish a good instruction routine. Once you have worked out the routine, make sure you stick with it for the long term. For illustration, your staffy will be much more settled if it is walked, fed and put to bed at about the same time each and every day. Breaking a dog’s routine can lead them to become nervous and restless, because they much prefer to know exactly what is going to happen every day. These types of dogs also enjoy taking food from the master’s hand but you should teach the pet early not to grab food from your hand.
A leash is a very useful way to keep your staffy close to you during training staffordshire bull terriers . These dogs can be very muscular as previously mentioned and this means that they can get so excited that they can tug the lead out of your hands or they can even hurt you if you are not cautious. Lead training your staffy from an early stage will eliminate the chance of it escaping and causing harm to you or your dog. In actual fact any element of staffy training should ideally commence when your pet is still young.
Staffies also like to chew on things and getting it a toy that he/she can chew on is the key because the dog may end up chewing on your property, such as your clothes and your furniture. A toy that might last a smaller dog several months can be speedily broken by a staffy’s powerful jaws, so make sure you get them something long-lasting.
You should make it clear to your staffy that you don’t like it chewing something, by telling it ‘No’ in a firm voice. Do this from a youthful age and you will reap the benefits when the dog is stronger.
Every hound should develop some social interaction ability with other dogs and staffies are no different. Staffies can be a bit belligerent with other dogs, so once again some early preparation to halt this trait will be very useful.
