Jeff Garlin battling his inner demons in 'No Sugar Tonight'

For decades we’ve been told that “fat is a feminist issue.” But in his show, “No Sugar Tonight,” now at the Steppenwolf Upstairs Theatre, Jeff Garlin suggests this catchy phrase tells only half the story. He also cannily observes that most women would be more apt to date an alcoholic or a drug addict before going out with the fat guy at the next table who is stuffing his face with doughnuts. There is some truth in this.

Garlin, as he readily admits, has weight issues, and they are more than cosmetic. He has diabetes. In recent years, he has lost a considerable amount of his , and for more than two years, he has sworn off sugar consumption. Carbs are a different story, however, and he guiltily confesses to chowing down six slices of Hawaiian pizza served up on the set of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” the hit HBO show in which he plays Larry David’s loyal manager, Jeff Greene, and for which he also serves as executive producer.

Garlin, of course, is a confessional comic, and while he manages to generate both laughter and recognition as he chronicles the various subterfuges and psychological issues that can accompany weight problems, an abiding sense of self-loathing, discomfort, barely suppressed anger and pain inevitably emerges from his show.

But please, don’t call it “a show.” According to Garlin, his act has a title only because Steppenwolf asked him to devise one. And his “ramblings” are not a “work-in-progress,” either — a description he says he prefers to apply to himself. As for the “scenery” in this non-show, it is meant as a joke, and consists of some scaffolding, a ladder, a folding chair, an unplayed ukulele and a plastic jack-o’-lantern with a ladle — used for scooping up water (he wanted something with more visual interest than a standard plastic bottle). Let’s just say the stage is about as decorated as Garlin, who wears slouchy jeans and a brown Izod T-shirt.

Burping was a major element in Wednesday’s opening night performance during which Garlin told us he was having digestive problems as a result of a new diabetes medication. (Sipping from a bottle of Gatorade, he slammed the audience member who reminded him the drink contains a good deal of sugar.)

The superiority of the “reformed” fat person also was a frequent subject, with Garlin telling us how he has tried to motivate others while backsliding himself, and how he used to order five doughnuts rather than entering the “half-dozen” realm. Aside from fat issues (and a very funny description of how getting up from a chair when fat can resemble those “evolution of man” charts), Garlin, who continually returns to the notion of marriage as wonderful/horrible, talks about being middle-aged. These days, he quipped, he would happily seduce a pretty young girl, but rather than sex, he’d prefer to invite her to have a nap with him.

How to Make an Origami Crane

The origami crane is one of the most popular characters people create with origami paper. While origami cranes look very impressive, they are actually one of the first things that many beginner origami folders learn how to make. Below you will find easy step-by-step instructions for how to make an origami crane.

Steps to make an origami crane

1. Select the origami paper color and pattern of your choice, remembering that you must always start with paper that is perfectly square. Origami paper is slightly thinner and often has a pattern printed on both sides to make the folding process easier and to make the lines of the end product cleaner.

2. Fold the square once to make a triangle and then once more to make another triangle. Note: The paper should now be ¼ of its original size.

3. Lift up the paper at the point of the triangle to make a new square.

4. Fold the sides of this point down. Note: You should be left with a shape that looks like a square with one small triangle crease at the top.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the other point of the triangle that you made in step 2. Note: You should end up with a square shaped paper when you are done.

6. Looking at your square like a diamond, make a fold in the paper at the top corner of your triangle fold, where it is attached to the rest of the shape.

7. Using the fold line that you made in step 6 as a guide, lift up that same triangle flap of your square but this time fold the sides of the triangle towards the middle. You should end up with a kite shape in the center of your paper after making these folds.

8. Repeat step 7 on the other side of the paper so that you end up with a tall diamond or perfect kite shape.

9. Fold over both sides of your kite shape so that you create a skinnier kite shape.

10. Fold up the bottom tabs outward and to the sides to make a crown shape.

11. From your crown shape, make a head by pushing one of the pointy ends of your crown inside out while folding it down.

12. Fold both wings down to create the crane’s outstretched wings.
