Five tied for Mass. Am lead; Mullany also in the hunt
Tuesday July 12, 2011GREAT BARRINGTON -- It was a good day for the home team in the first round of the Massachusetts Amateur Championship at Wyantenuck Country Club on Monday.
The host club's only entry in the state's top amateur event, 22-year-old Davis Mullany, fired a 1-under-par 69 to put himself one shot behind the leaders and in prime position to advance to match play on Wednesday.
The fivesome of Frank Vana, Jr., Dan Falcucci, Ryan Riley, Bradford Tufts and Colin Brennan are tied at 68 on a day that saw nine players in the 144-player field break par and five more equal it.
The field will be cut after today's round to the low 32 for the match play portion of the tournament, which begins Wednesday. There are 38 players at 72 or better.
Of those who broke 70, only Mullany and Jeff Corbett, who also shot a 69 along with 2003 Amateur champion Andy Drohan, played in the afternoon when the wind kicked up and the greens firmed up.
"My ball-striking was really solid and my putting was good for the most part," said the recent Dartmouth College graduate. "I did have two three-putts, which made me mad, but I also made some putts.
Indeed, after three-putting his 13th hole -- the par-4 fourth hole since he started on the back nine -- he made three big putts over the next three holes that kept his round going, starting with a 40-footer on the par-5 fifth.
"It would probably have gone six feet past if it didn't hit the hole," Mullany said.
On the 356-yard, par-4 sixth, he hit one of his few wayward shots, a 3-wood that left him behind trees in the left rough. He advanced into a greenside bunker and hit a delicate sand shot before draining a speedy 8-foot putt to save par.
On the 228-yard, par-3 seventh hole, which played as the course's fourth-most difficult hole, Mullany missed badly to the right and was forced to chip out in front of the green. His chip shot left him another testing 8-footer but he calmly knocked it in.
"That was a really good putt," Mullany said." Right past the hole it gets really slick. I was getting a little tired and it was a slow round. Those were big putts. My stroke is getting a littler better."
With a band of Wyantenuck members in tow, Mullany finished with a pair of solid pars to put himself in a relatively comfortable position with the cut likely to come in the 144-146 range.

What is Unproctored Internet Testing?
Unproctored Internet testing (UIT) is the administration of Internet-based tests to individuals outside a traditional test proctoring setting like a testing center. An unproctored Internet test could be completed by applicants in their homes or in libraries – literally anywhere they can access the Internet.
There are at least three types of UIT in personnel selection: Open, Invitation and Supervised. UIT in Invitation mode has the potential to yield better test data. In the invitation mode, applicant information is captured and reviewed by either automated or human processes, or both. This review of applicant information is the basis for determining whether applicants are granted access to the testing session. The requirements to pass this step in the process can be as simple as completing the required fields on an application to as in-depth as meeting minimum qualifications, passing a phone screen with a recruiter or attending an on-site recruiting event. If applicants successfully complete this step they are invited to complete the testing session.
Two important points about UIT invitation mode: First, there is no human supervision of the testing process, but applicants may interact with a person as part of the recruitment and screening process. Second, although invitation mode provides more information about applicants than open mode, the identity of the applicants who actually take the test is still unknown because the test is administered with no human supervision. Human supervision of the testing process is a key factor that distinguishes proctored from unproctored testing. A fully proctored testing session involves human verification of applicant identity and human supervision of applicants completing the tests. The advent of online testing has created a testing scenario that involves human interaction, but is not fully proctored.
The three modes described in the previous section broadly capture the type of UIT that occurs today. These categories differ from proctored testing where trained human proctors monitor applicants, sometimes individually, through the entire testing process.
