Local Navy Contract Awards

WASHINGTON (July 14, 2011)—The U.S. Department of Defense this week announced the following contract awards that pertain to local Navy activities or local military contractors.

AAI Corporation, Hunt Valley, Md. , is being awarded a $35,763,523 modification to existing previously awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract (N00174-11-D-0001) for Universal Test Set systems, accessories and spares needed to support the Naval Explosive Ordnance Division, Indian Head, Md. Work will be completed in Austin, Texas, and work is expected to complete in September 2011. Contract funds in the amount of $3,106,973 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head, Md. , is the contracting activity.

DynCorp International, Fort Worth, Texas , is being awarded a $92,866,122 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract to provide organizational level maintenance and logistic support on all aircraft and support equipment for which the Naval Test Wing Atlantic has maintenance responsibility. This maintenance responsibility includes all rotary, fixed, lighter-than-air, and unmanned aircraft on-site for project testing, transient aircraft, loaner aircraft, leased aircraft, and tested civilian aircraft assigned to the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, Patuxent River, Md. In addition, labor and services will be provided to perform supportability/safety studies and off-site aircraft safety/spill containment patrols and aircraft recovery services. Work will be performed in Patuxent River, Md., and is expected to be completed in July 2012. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The contract was competitively procured via an electronic request for proposal, with two offers received. The Naval Air Systems Command Patuxent River, Md. , is the contracting activity (N00421-11-C-0033).

BAE Systems Land & Armaments, L.P., Minneapolis, Minn. , is being awarded a $7,650,242 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for technical, logistical, and engineering research and development efforts in support of 25mm, 57mm, 155mm, and five-inch Navy surface gun weapon systems that are in service or in development. BAE Systems Land & Armaments is the sole designer, developer, and producer of medium and large caliber naval gun systems.

Indian Head Rail Trail and Mattawoman Creek

Located just 18 miles from the Nation’s capital, the Indian Head Rail Trail is a 13-mile long multi-use path in Charles County, Maryland. Converted from an abandoned railroad corridor into a paved, 10-foot wide asphalt path in 2008, this popular trail connects the charming town of Indian Head to Route 301 in White Plains.  The trail recreational uses include biking, walking, running, and in-line skating. 

The Town of Indian Head’s portion of the trail provides the trail user with outstanding opportunities to see an array of Southern Maryland wildlife.  Viewing areas of Mattawoman Creek enable the user to stop and enjoy sights of herons, egrets, ospreys, eagles, beavers, otters, Monarch butterflies, and more.  Because it is largely surrounded by forest land, Mattawoman Creek is one of the few segments of the Chesapeake Bay to remain relatively pristine.

Indian Head Village Green

Just a few short blocks from Mattingly Avenue in the other direction is downtown Indian Head and the Village Green.  Originally the site for the Indian Head Naval Ordnance Station’s officer housing, the 9.5 acres were transferred to the town of Indian Head for use as a public gathering place.  A year-round Pavilion facility is located in the center of the village green.  Complete with an indoor-outdoor stage, seating for 400 people theater-style, and a fully equipped kitchen, the Pavilion offers an opportunity for frequent social gatherings and entertainment.  Some of Indian Head’s more well known community gatherings include the Fourth of July celebration and fireworks, Take Back the Night, the Indian Head 100 (a bicycle race for all ages), and the annual Christmas tree lighting.

For the trail user and town visitor, the Green offers ample parking, water fountains, and rest rooms.

The Indian Head Center for the Art

If your day in Indian Head turns into night, the Indian Head Theater for the Arts at 4185 Indian Head Highway is the place to go.  The Center is dedicated to the cultural advancement of the region through education, arts and entertainment. Managed by the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Chesapeake Bay Floating Theatre, Inc., the Center houses the Black Box Theatre and presents a variety of performing arts programming.  Event and program information can be found at www.indianheadblackbox.org .
