The laptop fairytale

Like Ponce de Leon seeking his fountain or Indiana Jones seeking that bloody chalice, I've spent many years questing for an object that I'm not sure exists: the perfect laptop.

I've tried tiny Japanese net-books and monstrous, Canadian- designed powerhouses. I've tried PCs and Macs. I've dabbled in tablets of every variety.

It's an ongoing tale, and this installment could be called Beauty and the Beast. If it were possible to take the genetic code of two computers and splice them into one device, I'd get these two to have babies and my search would be over.

The Beast in this case is the Alienware M17x, the latest high-end video gaming PC by the company that practically invented the genre (and then got snapped up by Dell). It's truly a behemoth in both size and power. Which is both a good and bad thing.

The M17X starts at $1,499 at www.dell.ca,but in order to beef it up to truly epic specifications, you're looking at spending between $2,000 and $2,500. Yes, $2,500. For a laptop computer.

And "laptop" might be a bit of a misnomer. The M17X weighs 5.3 kg (nearly 12 pounds), meaning it's not something you'd want to tote around in a shoulder bag.

That's the downside. The upside? Pure, uncompromising power. From 3D Blu-ray viewing to video editing, there are virtually no tasks too demanding for this machine. And properly customized, this thing will crush any game you throw at it.

Our demo unit had the optional 1920 x 1080-pixel display (in addition to a faster Intel Core i7 processor and 1.5 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M video card), and we were able to run high-end games such as Crysis 2 at full resolution with all the visual bells and whistles maxed out. In fact, there's no game in our collection that could slow this beast down -- for a laptop, that's incredible.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the Samsung Series 9 ($1,699). This is the Beauty to the Alienware's Beast, and might just be the most svelte and lovely computer we've used.

Weighing just 1.3 kg (2.88 pounds) but boasting a 13.3- inch high-def screen, the Series 9 is the antidote to underpowered netbook computers. Despite being skinny (1.6 cm at its thickest point) and light, it's a powerful machine that could easily be your primary work PC. The multi-touch trackpad, fast boot-up time and great battery life are icing on the cake.

While it's not going to rival the power of the Alienware, the Series 9 has an Intel Core i5 processor, 4 GB of fast RAM and a 128 GB solid state hard drive -- on the small side, capacity-wise, but extremely fast. It's also sexy-looking as all heck, in a charcoal grey aluminum-like alloy with subtle accents.
