Mom Blog: Facing our own Goliath

So many Bible stories have that 'soft & fuzzy' Sunday school feel to them. Over the next few posts, I'm going to look at stories we know by heart but probably haven't taken to heart a useful lesson for our own adult life. Posts might be long because I want to give you the Biblical references so you can read God's word for yourself as we dig things apart and apply them. I know how tempting it is to skim over the actual Biblical account, but it will help tremendously if you read it for yourself! Besides His words are really what matters, mine are mere interpretations.  We've all heard he was a giant, but just how giant was he? A cubit is the length from the tip of ones middle finger to their elbow, which ranges 17 to 22 inches. A span is the distance between the stretched out tips of the thumb & little finger, which is about 9 inches. So 6 cubits plus one span could be anywhere from 111 inches to 141 inches or 9 feet 3 inches to 11 feet 9 inches. His coat of armor weighed 5000 shekels, or a mere 125 pounds! The tip of his spear alone weighed 15 pounds.  What Goliath are you facing? Bills piling up? Illnesses robbing you of energy? Relationships seem impossible to repair? Have you experienced a loss or pain so deep you don't think you can go on? What is your focus on? Are you stuck on all the things that are holding you back in life? How can you get that bright sunny 'see-the-whole-picture' kind of focus? Let's dig into what David did when he faced Goliath.  David didn't concentrate on Goliath. He did not shake with fear over his size. He did not think of the 500 million ways Goliath could kill him and what he might do with his body afterward. David's focus was on the Lord. Can we overcome grave illnesses on our own? Can we dig our way out of a deep depression on our own? Can we mend relationships that have defiled by infidelity, lies & deep anguish? Can we pay our way out of problems? Instead of focusing on what you have, try focusing on WHO has you! The Lord is the same yesterday, today & tomorrow. The same God who rescued David from the hands of Goliath can rescue you from your Goliath. If we could deliver ourselves from all of our problems, what purpose would God serve? Better yet, what would be the purpose of our problems?  I would not even make an appointment to view the house in the above picture. But because I know it's my parents' house, because I've lived there many years.
