Cardiac disease remains a major health concern in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) by 2030, almost 23.6 million people will die from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), mainly from heart disease and stroke. These are projected to remain the single leading causes of death.
Recently, coronary heart disease came in the spotlight after the husband of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Dr Gregory Bissessar successfully had major heart surgery, known as a triple bypass, which prompted the Prime Minister to urge the public to check their own heart health. The Prime Minister advised, I think it is very important, especially when you are over 50, I believe, or even over 45, that you want to do regular check-ups. Once a year you should do a full check-up.
The Prime Minister also advised people to adopt healthy lifestyles and noted that it was her husbands exercise regime which allowed him to survive on a 95 percent blocked heart. Greg is also very good with vegetables and fruits; (it was) that and his exercise I think that kept him alive in spite of such a very major occlusion (blockage) of the heart. So medical checks of course regularly; fruit, healthy diet and exercise.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels, and include: coronary heart disease disease of the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle; cerebrovascular disease disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain ; peripheral arterial disease disease of blood vessels supplying the arms and legs ; rheumatic heart disease damage to the heart muscle and heart valves from rheumatic fever, caused by streptococcal bacteria; congenital heart disease malformations of heart structure existing at birth; deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism blood clots in the leg veins, which can dislodge and move to the heart and lungs.
Coronary artery bypass surgery is performed on people who suffer from severe coronary artery disease (CAD), in which the arteries that bring blood to the heart muscle are clogged, a condition caused by fatty deposits on the inner walls of the arteries. The surgery is also performed on people who suffer from severe angina (pain that occurs when the heart muscle isnt receiving enough oxygen).

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is adamant about warning users of the health risks linked to drospirenone-based birth control pills, such as Yaz and Yasmin. Studies have linked use of the oral contraceptives to venous thromboembolism (VTE), commonly known as blood clots.
Compared to levonorgestrel-based contraceptives, users of Yaz and Yasmin have a two to three times greater risk of developing VTE. The dangerous blood clots can occur in the legs or pelvis, leading to deep vein thrombosis. A pulmonary embolism can occur if a blood clot travels to the lungs and blocks the pulmonary artery. The results can be long-term health complications and death.
Health care professionals can misdiagnose VTE symptoms as something less serious. The early warning signs of VTE often appear in the legs and lower extremities. Symptoms may include tenderness, swelling, warmth, skin discoloration, persistent pain, rapid pulse and shortness of breath. The FDA advises women to consult a doctor immediately if they suspect they have VTE symptoms.
The FDA also advises users of Yaz and Yasmin to speak with their doctor about discontinuing use of the contraceptive. The FDA will continue looking into the health risks associated with Yaz and Yasmin to assess their risks to users.
