York Twp. teen wins at worldwide Google Science Fair

A Dallastown Area High School student beat out projects from around the world to win in her age group at the worldwide Google Science Fair.

Lauren Hodge, of York Township, won a $25,000 scholarship and other prizes for her project "Decreasing Carcinogens." She celebrated her 14th birthday Sunday, while in California for the fair.

Lauren's project looked at the effect of using different marinades -- lemon juice and soy sauce, among them -- on the level of potentially harmful carcinogens in grilled chicken. Earlier this year, her project won her the grand champion title at the Dallastown Area High School Science and Engineering Fair.

She put her project online to enter the Google fair. More than 7,500 projects were submitted from around the world, according to Google.

In April, Lauren found out she was one of 60 semifinalists. In May, she learned she was one of 15 finalists and would be flown to Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.

"I really didn't expect it," she said Thursday.

While at Google headquarters over this past weekend, Lauren was able to meet the other finalists. They did a weather balloon project, sending one with Android phones 100,000 feet into the air, saw the Google campus, and competed in a Lego competition, among other activities.

By the time judging rolled around, it didn't feel like the students were competing anymore, she said. One of them was just going to get lucky and win.

Lauren, who will be a junior next year, said she was a little nervous about the judging, but they mostly asked questions she'd anticipated, such as the real-life applications for her project.

Brenda Hodge, Lauren's mom, said that the judges said she stood out because of she was easy to talk to and explained her project well.

"It seemed like it was very natural for her," she said.

An awards ceremony was held Monday. When her name was called, her mom was so excited she never got around to snapping a photo, Lauren said.

"I was really surprised and excited," she said. "I did not expect it at all."

In addition to the scholarship, Lauren's win earned her a trophy made out of Legos, Google Chrome notebook computer, an Android phone, several Lego kits, and a yearlong virtual internship at Lego, among other prizes. National Geographic offered a future internship, and one college offered a free ride when she's finished with high school.

They have had experience already doing easy science projects, biology science projects and earth science projects.
