Smart devices bring in new search services

By Yoon Ja-young

Two decades ago, it took a lot of effort to get information one needed. There were mainly two options ― look for the people who have the information or look up the books at the library. The Internet search technology brought in a revolution in the acquisition of information, and one has only to type the keywords they want on the keyboard.

The second revolution in the information search was triggered by smart devices. Smartphones, which are as smart as computers on top of having mobility, brought the Internet to our hands. Plus, it has auditory, visual and tactile sense capabilities. They enabled smart devices to offer new kinds of search services.

Voice and music search

Voice search is the most widely used new search services by smartphone users. As they have only to speak their queries, it is helping many smartphone users who find it difficult to type correctly on phones. “The input even on computers is not easy. They don’t know what to type. On phones it’s much harder because it doesn’t have a proper keyboard,” said Mike Schuster, a research scientist at Google who is working on the project to improve the service.

Korea is one of the biggest countries for voice. Portal operator Daum also launched Korean language mobile voice search for the first time here in June last year. The voice search is available at Daum’s map and music applications as well. In map application, for instance, one has only to say “pharmacy nearby,” or “bar near Gangnam Station,” and they get the location immediately.

However, accuracy is still an issue for the voice search services. According to Google, mobile speech inputs grew six times during the past year. Google is making use of this data to understand how users speak. “It helps us adapt to different speaking styles, different accents of male and female, and new words…The speech recognition has to be accurate and fast,” he said. “Ninety percent of our work is improving accuracy and the speed of the system,” he said.

He added that there is a virtuous circle here ― when accuracy improves, more people use the system, and then Google gets more data with which they can improve accuracy.

“As an engineer I believe it should be as good as human, as good as your sister or your brother you talk to. They know what to do when you say something.

Google Music Lyrics: A Greasemonkey Script for Firefox Adds Lyrics ...

A Greasemonkey script for Firefox called "Google Music Lyrics" helps you adds a lyrics panel to Google Music beta.

This script adds a panel on the right in Google Music Beta for lyrics. Lyrics are fetched from SongLyrics.com and automatically populated whenever you change songs. It wouldn't take much to alter the script to work with other Lyrics websites. Right now, it just does a search based on title and author and selects the first result.

The lyrics are cached so that they're displayed instantly the next time you play the same song. You can also edit the lyrics and the changes are saved using HTML5 local storage.

To hide the panel, click the title.

Chris Hendry, who developed the script, plans to add other lyrics providers, allow users to import and export lyrics and to make the script work in Google Chrome.

You can get the script here , and Greasemonkey here .
