Top acts jazz up arts festival
For five days the DSG Campus in Grahamstown was a hive of activity, where the buzz was all about jazz at this year’s National Arts Festival.
It was the centre for the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, where 350 students aged between 13 and 26 attended classes given by 40 high school teachers plus South African and international musicians.
Besides the classes, there were 45 performances by more than 80 South African musicians and 32 foreign musicians from 13 countries.
Music flowed from the practice rooms, rehearsal venues and performances halls. The atmosphere was electric and the energy tangible.
Festival director Alan Webster said: “We don’t teach, we inspire.”
Just watching Marcus Wyatt and Shannon Mowday dashing off to teach or rehearse was tiring. Both seemed in great demand. Someone else who was busy every day was former Capetonian Mark Ginsberg, now living in Australia.
Highlights came thick and fast and included the hard swinging pianist Afrika Mkhize and the 14-year-old drum whizz from St John’s College, Jordan Sunnasy. MD Nick Carter called him “the groove master”. The subtle compositions and intriguing piano playing of French pianist Carine Bonnefoy, the unbelievable version of Angel Eyes from 19-year-old Port Elizabeth vocalist Titi, the guitar playing of Anton Goudsmit of the Dutch band The Ploctones, the worthy winner of The Standard Bank Young Artist 2011, pianist Bokani Dyer, and the choirs from Cape Town and Stellenbosch. It never stopped.
Then there was the amazing transformation McCoy Mrubata did with the members of The Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band, turning them from pitiful to professional.
Saxman Chris Engel was a revelation. Hearing him made me glad I had given up playing. I would have hated meeting him in some dark jam session.
However, I have the hard task of choosing a few highlights out of five days of highlights.
The Danish sextet Wonderbrazz were brilliant and fun to listen to. Their idea of funk comes directly from the real rhythm and blues underpinned with a New Orleans street-beat. All are strong soloists. At their workshop, titled Introduction to Funk, drummer Esben Duus did a brilliant job demonstrating the history of how the funk rhythm grew out of military drumming and how the drum kit grew along with it. The musical examples played by the full band had everyone grooving and the youngsters enthralled.
