MT COLAH: Margot Sullivan is urging people to beware of paralysis ticks after her three-year-old dog, Bella, almost died after being bitten by a tick recently.
Ms Sullivan said she realised Bella’s symptoms were pointing towards a tick.
“It was about 4am in the morning and Bella did a really strange bark,” she said. “I went and checked on her and she was completely limp, with her tongue hanging out of her mouth.
“I called my two daughters and we started checking Bella’s body for ticks. We found one under the collar.”
Ms Sullivan pulled the tick out and took Bella to the vet. She said she was shocked to find it.
“I am always vigilant in summer, but I didn’t think there was a reason to be worried in winter,” she said.
Asquith Vet Clinic veterinarian Brad Garlick, who treated Bella, said it was unusual to see ticks at this time of year but he had seen some cases in the past few weeks.
“The worst thing is the owners aren’t expecting it,” he said.
“If you suspect your animal has a paralysis tick, take it to the vet straight away. There is a better survival rate if we catch it early.
