Three teen girls robbed at Columbia County Amphitheater

It happened about 11:30 p.m. at the Columbia County Amphitheater. The three Lakeside High School students say the Columbia County Amphitheater is a popular hang out for kids their age, one they used to think was safe.

"Every time I closed my eyes I heard, 'Don't make me do this," Maddy said.

Late Sunday night, 17-year old Maddy, and 16-year-olds Christina and Hannah were hanging out at the Columbia County Amphitheater and Pavilion.

"There must have been about 100 people playing soccer, they were dancing, they were singing," Maddy said.

Just as they were about to leave, someone came out of the shadows.

"Somebody came up and grabbed my leg and said, 'Don't make me do this.' And we turned around, and he was reaching in his pocket like he had a gun," Maddy said.

They say the man grabbed two of their purses, then took off toward a second suspect and getaway car.

"Luckily, I didn't have much in my purse; he's going to laugh when he finds $10 in there," Christina said.

Investigators say several others nearby tried to help the girls, and even tried to chase down the armed robber, who was wearing a ski mask.

"Very scary eyes, I will never forget those eyes," Hannah said.

The amphitheater is almost always busy in the daylight, and the girls say sometimes it's just as crowded after hours, too.

"We thought we were in a safe area, we really did, and there was a lot of people around so we thought we were good," Hannah said.

So as the girls find a new place to spend their weekends, they hope others see their story and watch out.

"I do hope now that there will be more surveillance in the area and I hope that people will understand that, even though it seems like a safe spot, you have to be aware of your surroundings. Something can happen, even if you don't think it will," Maddy said.

The girls gave a vague description of the suspect -- they could only say that he was a younger black male. The witnesses caught a glimpse of the getaway car and described it as a black Nissan four-door car with a South Carolina license plate.

If you know anything about this case, call the Columbia County Sheriff's Office at (706) 541-2800.
