Chamber learns about domestic abuse shelter from COPE rep
At the July 6 meeting of the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce, guest speaker Brenda Basnett informed members and guests of the function of COPE, a domestic-abuse shelter serving Dallas, Laclede, Texas and Wright counties. She said that in the last month COPE served 28 women and children from Dallas County.
Also during the monthly chamber meeting held at the Dallas County R-1 Alumni Building, COPE's office manager and volunteer coordinator Basnett explained the amount of time a client may spend at COPE's shelter in Lebanon is decided on a case-by-case basis and that a variety of assistance is available.
Services offered include: a 24-hour hotline and crisis intervention, legal advocacy, parenting help, weekly support groups, assistance in securing employment and affordable housing, referrals to mental-health and legal resources, safe and secure shelter, and community education and awareness programs.
In a short video featuring some of the success stories of the not-for-profit agency, one client said of COPE: "It's a comfortable place to fall. I never knew such good people existed."
COPE is a member agency of the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic Violence (www.mocadv.org) and operates a 24-hour hotline, (417) 532-2885 or toll free at (877) 275-0930. Special programs for children staying at the shelter are geared to specific age groups, and the PAVE Project is a newly created school-based prevention program aimed at raising awareness of dating violence.
A legal advocate visits Dallas County twice a month, and more information about COPE and its programs is available by calling (417) 533-5201. Information about volunteer opportunities is also available at that same number.
Also at the July 6 chamber meeting, it was announced the Dallas County Area YMCA will host a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1. The event is being co-sponsored by Buffalo First Baptist Church and is designed to help compensate for the shortfall in supply created by the Joplin tornado.
"I think we can get 100 units of blood that day. That's our goal," said Dominic Santomassimo, Dallas County Area YMCA director.
In addition, chamber president David Andrews and executive director Kathy Kesler reported that the chamber office on Maple Street is undergoing renovations, including a new entryway.
The Aug. 3 meeting of the chamber of commerce will be held at noon at Time Out Cafe, 749 W. Dallas in Buffalo.
