Doped Semiconductor Nanocrystals Promising for Solar Cells

Researchers from Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University have shown that semiconductor nanocrystals can be doped in a way that allows them to be used as conductors, making them useful in many electronic and electro-optical devices including solar cells.

S olar panels are typically made from a pn junction, which separates negatively charged electrons and thepositively charged holes, producing an electrical current. The researchers were able to dope nanocrystals n- and p-type dopants, meaning they could be used to make solar panels more efficient and less expensive.

According to Eran Rabani of Tel Aviv University, the quest to electrically dope nanocrystals has been an uphill battle. The crystals can self-purify, which means that they cleanse themselves of dopants. Also, some synthetic methods used to dope bulk semiconductors are too harsh to use with nanoscale crystals. The key, explains Rabani, was to find a method for doping the nanocrystals without "bleaching" their optical properties – and therefore nullifying their absorption capabilities.

The researchers used room temperature diffusion controlled reactions, bathing the crystals in a solution that included the dopants. Slow diffusion allowed the impurities to find their way into the nanocrystal. The researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope to determine the success of their doping procedure.

The results indicated that the nanocrystals were doped with n- and p-type dopants. This will allow for them to be used in electronics that require a pn junction such as solar panels, light emitting diodes, and more. The researchers were also able to control the optical properties of the nanocrystals with doping.
