On the way to Alamogordo the squadron stopped for a picture in the Sacramento Mountains: (standing, from left) Cadet Senior Airman Kathryn Vernon, Cadet Airman 1st Class Tina Kolas, Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Robert Vernon, Cadet Tech. Sgt. Dillon Holloway, Cadet Airman Cody Crabb, Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Bryce Johnson, 1st Lt. Kyle Vernon, (kneeling, from left) Cadet Airman 1st Class Daniel Hernandez, Cadet Senior Airman Zeke Arroyo, Cadet Airman Basic Leonard Donahew, Cadet Senior Airman Joseph Garcia, Cadet Airman Andrew Allison and Cadet Airman Basic John Farmer. After five hours of convoy driving March 17, the squadron descended out of the Sacramento Mountains into the Tularosa Valley of New Mexico, home of White Sands Missile Range, Holloman and White Sands National Monument. After a quick check-in at their hotel, squadron members raced the setting sun to reach Holloman’s Shifting Sands Base Dining Facility for dinner – a meal the cadets pronounced “delicious” – and an opportunity to explore the nearby airplane display. The following day, March 18, squadron members hurried to their appointment at the Holloman Visitor Center for a tour the base public affairs officer had arranged. Boarding a bus, the squadron traveled around the perimeter of the airfield where American F-22 “Raptor” fighters and German Panavia Tornado fighter-bombers were coming to life as their ground crews prepared for another day. On the other side of the field, as ground crews prepared their charges, a few of the 20 QF-4 Phantom fighters growled menacingly to life. The ubiquitous McDonnell Douglas F-4 "Phantom," considered by many to be the fighter of the Cold War, has long since left the Air Force combat inventory and is now relegated to service as an unmanned target drone. Undergoing the “Q conversion” has been the conclusion of their stellar career. The Lubbock members’ first stop was the High Speed Test Track.
