Battle against Savannah River weeds called success
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Officials say the use of herbicide to kill aquatic weeds in the Savannah River appears to have been successful.
The river was recently lowered about three feet so the herbicides could be applied.
Authorities say aquatic weeds have expanded rapidly in recent years and have become an impediment to navigation on the river. They include a species called elodea, which is used in tropical fish tanks.
The Augusta Chronicle reports that inspections along the river's downtown portion found much of the 35 acres of weeds had vanished.
The weeds include exotic species such as Brazilian elodea, which tends to spread rapidly and overtake shallow areas.
Although it is impossible to completely eradicate the weeds in the river, the authority hopes to arrange annual treatments to keep them under control.
