2000 cheer on soldiers returning home at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa --- An eruption of cheers flooded the room as the entry door lifted and out marched 220 returning Iowa Army National Guard soldiers led by the sound of bagpipes and drums.

Cameras flashed and tears of joy poured from the faces of more than 2,000 family members, friends and supporters who came to welcome home their loved ones on Sunday morning.

After nearly a year in Afghanistan, Dubuque-based Alpha and Delta companies, 1st Battalion, 133rd (Ironman) Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry ("Red Bull") Division returned to a welcome home ceremony held at the Grand River Center in Dubuque.

"The feeling of being home - there is nothing like it. There is no feeling to explain how it feels right now," said Spc. Jeremy Twedt, of Alden.

After a brief greeting and a few remarks by Dubuque Mayor Roy Buol, soldiers were dismissed to their families less than 20 minutes after they had marched in - an agonizing wait for loved ones searching for a familiar face in the sea of fatigue uniforms.

As soon as orders were given, families did their best to grab the attention of their soldier with personalized signs and T-shirts. Soldiers and family members who had spotted each other rushed to reunite.

Sgt. Kevin Stewart, of Charles City, was greeted by his parents, siblings and girlfriend, all in matching blue and red shirts.

"Its good to be back home. This is my second deployment so it got a little easier but it got a little harder, too, being away from family," Stewart said.

Stewart has been a member of the Army National Guard for nine years, dedicating his time and service to "be a part of something bigger."

Seated toward the back of the event center, Abbi Mueller wasn't able to find her fiance as he marched in with the rest of the soldiers. Spc. James Lange, of Garnavillo, wasn't able to spot her either, but soon after dismissal the pair was able to reunite.

"Its good to have him back. I cried when I first hugged him," Mueller said, wearing Lange's dog tags around her neck.
