In 2001, at the tender age of 3, Reagan underwent a heart transplant, something that took a little bit of a fight to get.
“They didn’t want to transplant her because she had Downs Syndrome,” Stephanie said. “Sen. Tim Hutchinson helped us and went to the legislature and called (Arkansas) Children’s (Hospital) and said you can’t deny someone on disability. On July 6, they listed her as a status two, which means even though she needed a heart, there were many people ahead of her because she didn’t need hospitalized.
“Twelve days later, on July 18, she got her heart, which is amazing. What that meant was the heart was such a perfect match. Just people being willing to be an organ donor opens up a lifetime of opportunities. She will now have a full life because somebody gave that gift of life at a difficult time.”
Reagan underwent her transplant at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, a place for which Stephanie sings praises.
“Children’s Hospital is wonderful,” Stephanie said. “They do many transplants and are one of the best in the country for transplants. Anytime anything goes on with Reagan, they have two specialty nurses we can call, day or night. They want her life to be a success and want her to be as healthy as possible.”
In addition to those of Children’s, Stephanie said many area doctors have helped to keep Reagan going, as well as Newton’s Pharmacy, which delivers medications on a daily basis.
“It’s really been a community effort to make sure this transplant has been a success,” she said. “That’s just incredible community support, you know?”
Reagan is one of six special needs children adopted by Stephanie. Also in the house is Charlie, a son Stephanie gave birth to 10 months ago.
“She (Reagan) loves helping with the baby,” Stephanie said. “She’s a really good helper. She’s a neat freak. Her favorite thing to do is the laundry.
