Pastors recount lives of four slain Wyoming family members during funeral service

Two young girls embrace as they exit First Christian Church following a funeral service Friday for four slain members of the Conant family in Wheatland. About 200 people attended the services of brothers Joseph Conant, 11, Charles, 13 and Everett, 18, and their uncle, Nacuma Roland Conant, 33. The four were found shot to death inside the boys' home July 7. The boys' father, Everett Conant III, has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder.

WHEATLAND — Nacuma Conant and his three young nephews, Everett, Joseph and Charles, weren’t just relatives — they were close friends.

Nacuma would often come over to his nephews’ house to check on them and to hang out. The boys knew him as “Uncle Comie.”

But a week after the four were shot dead, allegedly by the boys’ father, it was clear they had friendships and connections that extended far beyond each other.

Speaking to more than 200 people at a memorial service Friday, pastors Andy Gudahl and Ken Grant remembered the Conants as gregarious, driven people who, though they each had their own unique qualities, touched the lives of those around them on a daily basis.

“These four lives, these four individuals — four young men who grew together and depended on each other — we see them today in distinct and separate ways,” said Gudahl, pastor of First Christian Church in Wheatland. “But [they] molded together in a life that was filled with hope and promise.”

The four were gunned down on the evening of July 7 by the boys’ father, 35-year-old Everett Conant III, authorities said. He also allegedly shot his wife twice, but she managed to escape from the house and was subsequently treated and released from a Cheyenne hospital.

Conant has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder, among other charges. A judge this week ordered him to be evaluated at the state hospital in Evanston to see if he’s mentally competent to face charges.

The shootings sent shockwaves through Wheatland, a town that had only seen one homicide since 2002.

Nacuma and his three nephews were all natives of southern California.

Nacuma, 33, was mentally disabled, Gudahl said, yet he was a class representative in high school and studied art at a California community college.

“He excelled in artwork,” Gudahl said. “He was able to draw in detail anything someone requested of him.”

After moving to Wheatland, Nacuma loved to walk and bike, Gudahl said. He was also preparing to write a novel based on apocalyptic role-playing, he said.
