Although their campaign offices are just a few blocks apart on West Mason Street in Green Bay, the campaigns of 30th District Democratic Sen. Dave Hansen and Republican recall challenger David VanderLeest couldn't be more different.
Hansen, a 63-year-old political vet, is running a well-funded modern campaign that combines a ground game with an army of door-knocking volunteers and plenty of slick ads on major media. The 34-year-old VanderLeest, who helped make the recall possible, is running a low-budget campaign that relies largely on hand-painted signs, photocopied literature, volunteer efforts and free media.
Insider consensus is that Hansen is set up for an easy win against VanderLeest, whose history of legal issues has dogged his campaign. Those legal issues include accusations of domestic abuse that were dismissed by the court and recent accusations of child abuse that he denies.
But Hansen isn't coasting. He says in a recent interview with WisPolitics that a strong win is needed against VanderLeest in Tuesday's general election in order to set the tone for the eight recalls that follow.
"If we do well in northeast Wisconsin, then we win to start the momentum for the next eight to happen," Hansen said. "And there's a real chance, a good opportunity, for the Senate to turn Democratic. And that's the goal."
VanderLeest is undaunted by the Hansen campaign's big-budget approach.
"Our support lies with the grassroots volunteer labor," VanderLeest told WisPolitics in a separate interview. "Our volunteers have not been afraid of getting their hands dirty, painting homemade signs, knocking on doors, pounding in stakes for homemade signs and going anywhere there is a large mass of voters to speak with.
"That style of campaigning does not take large amounts of money."
VanderLeest maintains that press and ads focused on his legal issues haven't harmed his campaign.
"I think the public has seen that I've had accusations made against me I've been found innocent of and that this is just another from of mudslinging because Senator Hansen does not have a platform that can get him re-elected," he said. "His only option is to attack his opponent.
