'Free Sample' Promises Online May Not Be Real Steals

PITTSBURGH -- Anyone who has spent time surfing the Internet has seen at least one ad promising free stuff. Are those websites that offer to send you free samples of everything from laundry detergent to makeup all they're cracked up to be?

"Being a single mom with two boys in college, I will take anything I can get for free," Kathleen Dragone told WTAE Channel 4 Action News anchor Michelle Wright.

But Wright said that Dragone, like so many others, was suspicious of what she might be getting herself into.

"You get scared of, 'Is it real?' How much junk mail am I now going to get? Spam or email?" she said.

To check out the deals, Channel 4 Action News set up a new email account and signed up to a number of websites claiming to send free samples and coupons.

After one month, Dragone said she had not received anything for free, but she did get a text from one site with an offer for a $100 gift card to Walmart if she spent $144 on a magazine subscription.

Dragone said that wasn't the only frustrating part. She said it took a long time to keep clicking through site after site trying to get to the free stuff.

Sometimes the sites asked her to play games, including one with a scantily clad woman.

After a month, Dragone found only two offers that took her information and promised to mail samples in eight to 11 weeks.

Dragone was also frustrated by trying to print a coupon for something free or a discount. Often, the print option wouldn't work after Dragone had submitted personal information.

"It's been completely frustrating. They send you to all sorts of websites. They want all kinds of private information -- even your phone number -- to get promotions, and you never really get to the free things," Dragone said.

The frustration was compounded by spam. After a month, Dragone was getting dozens of spam messages every day.

In fact, Channel 4 Action News found that it was actually easier to go to the mall. After a half-hour of asking for samples, Dragone gathered more than she did in one month online. The samples included lotion, perfume, makeup, skin care and tooth whitener.

Wright also reported that if you're looking for medications, doctors may have free samples from pharmaceutical reps to try. For food, try going directly to manufacturers' websites to print coupons.
